The thyroid’s role in weight gain

The thyroid gland produces the thyroid hormone, which is instrumental in the regulation of the body’s metabolism, or rate of burning energy. This is a function that takes place in both humans and animals. The metabolism works by ensuring that a specific amount of oxygen travels around the body at a specific rate. Your Base Metabolic Rate (BMR) is this rate when you are resting. An ill functioning thyroid may be responsible for lowering the activity of this BMR and, thereby, causing your metabolism to slow down significantly. To see if you have any symptoms, read further…

The wonders of Walking!

Those wanting to lose weight, get fit or maintain their fitness levels are urged to keep on walking. This form of exercise boasts countless benefits. Diets may be effective over the short-term, but eating plans need to be coupled with regular cardiac exercise for weight loss and the maintenance of a healthy mass to be sustained.

One of its major selling points is that it can be executed at your convenience and personal pace. Whether you can manage 15 minutes before and after work or an hour during the day, it will ultimately benefit you and add to your fitness regime. Your pace is determined by your age and existing fitness levels. Walking is so effective because it uses most of the large muscle groups in one activity, and this applies regardless of the speed or length of time of your walk, providing these are within your reasonable capabilities. Best of all, it is FREE!

Eat yourself Thin

Maintaining a regular, effective fitness regime requires energy in the same way that a motor requires fuel. If we maintain high levels of physical activity but do not eat enough of the correct foods to sustain ourselves, our bodies are put at risk, and suffer many negative consequences as a result. Muscles and tissues that are not properly supported by nutrition become strained through a lack of energy.

Energy is received by eating the right proportions and combinations of carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats and maintaining a healthy fluid consumption throughout. If you are exercising regularly, exerting yourself significantly, ensure that most of your calories come from carbohydrates. In fact, you should aim to get up to 65% of your calories from carbs and only about 15% from proteins. These carbohydrates should be made up of fresh fruits, vegetables (carrots, sweet potatoes and beetroot), brown rice, barley, wholewheat bread, etc… The best proteins are found in lean meat, chicken / turkey, beans, lentils, peas and nuts.

Eating Out – Curbing the demons

Weight loss is only effective in the long-term when you adopt an eating lifestyle, rather than a diet. This means that the eater needs to maintain a constant consciousness about what they eat, making it a habit, rather than a temporary inconvenience to their daily routine. This implies being able to adapt the behaviour you may once have taken in order to incorporate your new eating lifestyle into ordinary life. Visiting a restaurant can be traumatic, a total breach of your fad diet, or an unnecessary indulgence.

However, there are several small precautions that may be taken in order to enjoy your eating out experience without the guilt:

Your cellphone is dirtier than a toilet

Cell phones harbor thriving colonies of bacteria and viruses. Researchers say, for example, that cell phones are major carriers of superbugs in hospitals. Now, a new gadget helps you sterilize your phone!

It’s no wonder cell phones are so disgusting. Our hands are dirty — we shake hands with people who are sick, touch bathroom door knobs and pet the dog — and our mouths spew whatever disease-causing viruses and bacteria are infecting our bodies. Cell phones are constantly coming into contact with both hands and mouth. When they’re not, they tend to be tucked a way in pockets, a nice, warm environment that promotes the growth of microorganisms.

Researchers at Ondokuz Mayis University in Turkey tested the cell phones of 200 doctors and nurses and found that nearly all — 95 percent — were tainted with bacteria, with some carrying the MRSA superbug that can sicken and even kill patients and that cannot be defeated with any antibiotic. They concluded that doctors and nurses were infecting patients with their cell phones. In the US, MRSA is the cause of most hospital infections.

There are several things you can do to protect yourself and others from your own cell phone. The easiest is to frequently clean your phone with rubbing alcohol.

You can also use a new product from PureLight, a company that makes UV wants for sterilizing large surfaces. Their new portable wand is designed for cell phones.

For the best protection, you can also use one of the methods above, plus use a Bluetooth headset most of the time, to minimize the mouth and hand contact with the phone.

Get paid to shop and eat – Total Scam!

I was going through some material today to post on here for the benefit of all of the people struggling with their goals (be it in life or weight) and I came across this website that claims to pay people to shop and eat. Interesting… It’s almost as interesting as the “take this pill and your penis will grow” scam or the “wash yourself with this soap and lose inches!”

What if I told you it was possible to get paid $10 to $50 an HOUR just to go to your shopping at your favorite mall … eat at your favorite restaurants… golf at your favorite golf courses… or enjoy a movie at your local theater … AND get it all for FREE!! PLUS, not only do you get everything for FREE and recieve a great paycheck for your time, but someone pays for the gas to drive your car!

THIS IS A MUST FOR ALL STAY AT HOME MOMS!

I hate to be taken for a ride and in this economic crisis I don’t think you’ll like it either. So stay away from “get paid to shop and eat” schemes because we all know with hard work it pays off eventually and you won’t be dissapointed. Money and family problems go hand in hand, and guess what, it effects your weight as well!

Fat-Pilers: Things That Make You Fat

Aspiring Elle Macphersons may already know that sugar, fat and processed foods make you fat and unhealthy. However, there are five other secret ‘fat-pilers’ – ingredients, diets and foods that play a key role in weight gain.

Carb-free liquor – Since all hard liquor is considered to be free of carbohydrates, this was considered to be safe. But, most beers and wines still contain sugar, which is a carbohydrate. So, even a low-carb glass of wine may contain over 100 calories.

Artificial sweeteners – Horrors! Our one last straw to sugary sweetness has been torn out of our clutches! Because our bodies are being deprived of real sugars, we are more likely to eat increased amounts in a search for the sugar our body needs and craves. Obviously, balance is required. Sweeteners are fine if a controlled amount of sugar is included in the diet elsewhere, but cutting sugar out completely is only likely to force us to search for it elsewhere. Read more »

Reasons For Weight Gain

When exercise and diet do not seem to be working for those starting to gain weight inexplicably or just struggling to lose the existing excess, many turn to miracle cures. However, there are several other possible causes for this struggle. These are important indications that your lifestyle is in urgent need of a change, and should be treated and managed with the utmost care for your welfare. These reasons include:

1.    Lack of sleep – When the body is deprived of sufficient sleep, it undergoes a significant amount of physiological stress. This causes it to store fat. Lack of sleep also causes sluggishness during our waking hours, and decreases our ability to cope with stress during the day. Many of us, whether knowingly or not, reach for a snack when we feel pressurised and stressed. Another typical reaction to a lack of sleep is late-night snacking. This is a dangerous habit as it not only increases our daily calorie intake, but also means that we go to bed soon after eating, allowing no time for the metabolism of the food.

Adults need approximately 8 hours of sleep every night. If you are feeling irritable, sleepy, or sluggish, this may be an indication that you are not getting enough sleep. Of course, regular exercise makes one sleep better, so that is always a must on the health regime. Read more »
